Wer auf der Autoroute du Soleil reist, wird sicher auch einen Abstecher nach Avignon machen. Denn es lohnt sich. Beherbergte die Stadt am östlichen Ufer der Rhône doch 70 Jahre lang Päpste und Gegenpäpste. Machtkämpfen in Rom sei Dank. 700 Jahre später profitiert Avignon immer noch von diesen unchristlichen Differenzen. Alleine der Papstpalast ist den Abstecher schon wert. Und dann gibt es da ja auch noch eine berühmte Brücke....

Wer in Avignon übernachten möchte, dem sei vor allem in den von Touristen überfüllten Sommermonaten eine Unterkunft ein wenig außerhalb der Stadt empfohlen. Wie zum Beispiel das Le Mas des Aromes in Entraigues sur la Sorgue, nur 15 Autominuten von der Avignoner Innenstadt entfernt.

Those travelling on the Autoroute du Soleil will surely make a diversion via Avignon. Because it is worth it.
